I'm David Kenward, and I'd like to welcome you to the place where Australia's karaoke community meets - whether you're a karaoke host or a singer, you'll find everything that you need in this one place. Ok, so Where2sing.com has had its imitators, and even had its gig list pirated some months back - but it still remains the #1 website for finding great venues in which to sing. The secret behind the Where2sing.com 'Gig Listings' is the custom built database that tracks karaoke gigs, ensuring that the information really is up-to-date by listing the 'Last Confirmed' date of every one of it's 800+ gigs. It's also free for you to access the Gig Listings - you'll be asked to supply some quick feedback on a karaoke gig you've already visited, or a short karaoke related experience or story, in return for 24hours access. Or you can choose to subscribe and have permanent access to all areas of the website. In this way Where2sing.com welcomes both the occasional singer in search of a new venue, and the dedicated karaoke enthusiast.
After finding some karaoke venues in which to sing whilst I was in Brisbane, I tried to do the same when I moved to Sydney. And after checking some karaoke hosts' websites, I set out with 3 pubs in central Sydney to visit. But none actually had karaoke, and when again I checked websites I realised that almost all the information was either out of date, had insufficient detail with which to find the venue, or was just plain wrong. But having driven past a pub on Oxford Street that had a sign saying 'karaoke', I successfully found my first NSW karaoke venue. And it was at this pub that I discovered that most karaoke singers had little idea where to find any other karaoke venues.
Taking pen and paper, I started compiling data from websites on a few Sydney venues - but soon found that much of the information was old. So I used a database to start making sense of the various pieces of information by collating them in date order - and it was only then that I ended up with listings that were accurate. Using this database, I started to visit more venues - and quickly found that very few of the other singers knew of more than one or two of these venues. 'Aha!', I thought, wouldn't it be great to have my database on a website so that other singers could find more karaoke venues - and so Where2sing.com was born.
The website started as a simple list of Sydney karaoke gigs, the list being exported daily from my database to the website. Even though the first list was of only about 30 venues, this was far beyond any other website, and I was delighted that other singers started using my list. Over the following months the list expanded, but this was because I spent hours making phone calls and scouring the few hosts' websites that existed at that time. But slowly the list expanded, and by the end of the first year the number of gigs had grown beyond the 300 mark.
Today, four years later, Where2sing.com has a brisk readership and lists over 800 currently running gigs Australia wide. Whether you're seeking karaoke in New South Wales, Western Australia or Tasmania, you're going to find gigs. Queensland has a well developed karaoke scene, as does Victoria, and whilst the Northern Territory and the ACT are not oversupplied with gigs, you'll find many listed. South Australia has some gis with excellent sound and songlists, and perhaps has Australia's best Monday night karaoke. But search the Gig Listings for yourself, and you may be surprised by the wide choice. Each gig has its full name, address and phone number, as well as the date and times of its next karaoke gig. And where the name of the karaoke host is known, this is also shown. And there's now a lot more information under gigs, with details about the type and size of venues, transport, food, drink prices, and the type of people you're likely to meet there. And of course there's a lot of detail about the karaoke itself, from the type of host, size and quality of songlist, through to how long you should expect to wait before you sing. You will also read about how much applause you might expect, and about the quality of other singers. Karaoke competitions are also featured in the information under gigs, with many having their prizes listed, and the heats, semi-finals and finals dates. Where2sing.com also sponsors the Australian trials of the 'Karaoke World Championships', and has a special page on which participating venues are listed. One of the most valuable part of the Gig Listings is the feedback from singers that appears under many of the listings, and singers also cast their vote as to the accuracy of the information provided by the host. The more interesting or entertaining of singers' feedback is also featured on the website's main page.
Where2sing.com is now more than purely a Gig Listings website, with main page news stories, regular karaoke gig reviews, short karaoke related experiences by singers, extra lists for karaoke competitions, Under-18s karaoke, karaoke suppliers, hosts, practice rooms and restaurants, and several archive pages of previous news stories and venue reviews. One of the hotly followed sections is the Where2sing.com 'National Top 10 Karaoke Venues' chart, and every visitor to the site is given one vote with which to choose his favourite venue. But the most popular section of the website is the Chat Forums, where you can read and chat about Australia-wide issues in the General Forum, or about local issues in your own State-Chat Forum. Be aware that some of the discussion can get quite heated...lol.
